September 29, 2011 - At the Western Justice Center's Annual Award program on September 10, Lim Ruger became the fourth law firm to receive the Western Justice Center's Builder of Peace Award for Law Firms.
Managing Partner John Lim accepted the award on behalf of the Firm. He remarked that "For our 20-lawyer firm to be recognized among previous awardees – Gibson Dunn, O'Melveny & Myers, and Latham & Watkins – is truly extraordinary. As the first minority-owned firm to receive this award, we are very grateful to the Western Justice Center for this honor."
The Western Justice Center's gala dinner at the Millennium Biltmore hotel saw over 350 distinguished guests, including many federal court judges, honor individuals and companies who have made outstanding efforts to advance conflict resolution.
The evening was highlighted by the appearance of Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa who praised the Western Justice Center's "work to promote peace in a world with too much conflict."
The Western Justice Center was started in 1987 by a group of judges, lawyers and civic leaders led by a member of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, the Honorable Dorothy W. Nelson, who believed that it is essential to find innovative ways to handle conflict and disputes without involving litigation.
In accepting the award, John Lim recounted the countless hours of pro bono work he coordinated in the aftermath of the 1992 civil unrest, and how this "reflected our soul as a law firm."
