September 28, 2009 - After more than a year of legal wrangling, the IRS recently succeeded in forcing the Swiss banking giant UBS AG to release the names of 4,450 U.S. clients with Swiss bank accounts at UBS. This case has made many people aware of a relatively obscure Treasury Department form known as the “Report of Foreign Bank and Financial Accounts” (commonly known as “FBAR”) that needs to be filed by certain U.S. persons to disclose their foreign financial/bank accounts.

September 15, 2009 – Lim Ruger represented a community bank in formulating the most cost-effective creditor’s rights strategy in enforcing a debt secured by mixed collateral (real property and personal property assets of a car wash business located on the property), with personal guaranties from the two owners of the borrowing entity. The matter involved a loan of approximately $7,500,000.

February 12, 2009 – Lim Ruger successfully closed a $78.3 million purchase of a major shopping center in Chino Hills. Lim Ruger client CRCH, LLC ("CRCH") purchased Crossroads Marketplace, a 264,000 square foot shopping center with prominent tenants such as Best Buy, Bed, Bath & Beyond, Steinmart, Pet Smart, Sports Chalet and CVS Pharmacy. The purchase and sale agreement provided for CRCH to assume the seller's $63 million loan. The lender took advantage of the liquidity crisis by imposing more than $2 million in new financial conditions, but Lim Ruger lawyers carefully structured the loan assumption through a series of amendments and collateral agreements to allocate almost all of these costs to the seller, thus producing a highly favorable outcome for CRCH.
February 12, 2009 – Representing the American subsidiary of Korean Broadcasting System and MBC, LIM RUGER litigators stopped defendant MyTV from intercepting and retransmitting their clients' broadcasts. Bryan King Sheldon, George Busu and Julie Kwun won a broad preliminary injunction barring defendant MyTV from retransmitting any of these clients' programs.
On January 20, 2009, Judge John F. Walter of the United States District Court, Central District of California, issued the antipiracy order. Defendants aggressively opposed the injunction, which was obtained after expedited discovery and several rounds of briefing. LIM RUGER has wide experience handling intellectual property matters and obtaining provisional remedies.
December 11, 2008 – Lim Ruger and the Japanese American Bar Association of Southern California hosted a reception honoring Judge Jon Takasugi on his appointment to the Superior Court of the County of Los Angeles, and Holly Fujie for being elected President of the California State Bar.
November 12, 2008 – Lim Ruger won an appeal that will allow the Firm's client, a corporate investor, to proceed with a multi-million dollar claim arising out of the defendants' breach of contract and related torts. While the investor's claim was pending in Los Angeles County Superior Court, the United States filed a civil action in federal court seeking forfeiture of certain assets owned by the defendants, which assets were acquired by the defendants with funds wrongfully taken from the investor.
October 28, 2008 - Lim Ruger successfully represented Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center in a putative class action challenging medical service prices charged to uninsured patients. A patient who received medical services from the hospital filed suit under California's unfair competition law, the Consumer Legal Remedies Action, and various contract and quasi-contract theories.
October 27, 2008 - Three new associates have joined Lim Ruger's Litigation Group, part of the Firm's commitment to excellence, expanded client service, and diversity.
October 21, 2008 - Lim Ruger is recognized by APALC (Asian Pacific American Legal Center) for making special contributions to the organization by providing over $50,000 in pro bono hours, fellowships and financial support. The award is especially highlighted by Lim Ruger's work in winning justice for the Korean War veterans in their case against Oakdale Memorial Park.

October 3, 2008 - Lim Ruger Foundation, a charity arm of Lim, Ruger & Kim, LLP, announced gift of $30,000 to the California Bar Diversity Scholarship Program towards scholarships to incoming California law students who come from communities underrepresented in the California Bar. Lim Ruger and ten other top law firms pledged total of $330,000 over three years.

LRK has partnered with prominent national class action firm Schifferin, Barroway, Topaz & Kessler, LLP to file a nationwide class action complaint against Countrywide Financial on behalf of Countrywide employees who participated in the company's 401k pension plan. The suit, Johnson v. Countrywide CV07-05879, filed in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles, alleges that the company and certain of its officers and directors mismanaged the pension plan by investing too heavily in Countrywide's own stock at times when they knew the stock was overvalued due to the impending meltdown in the prime and sub-prime mortgage markets. LRK litigators Bryan Sheldon and Lisa Yang are handling the matter for LRK, which is local counsel in the case.
